Type Locality and Naming
Upper Red River Valley. The type section is located on the car road from Yen Bai to Ngoi Hop (N = 21°46’; E = 104°48’) . It was named by Tran Dinh Nhan and Trinh Dzanh (1975).
Synonym: Điệp Cồ Phúc: Trần Đình Nhân, Trinh Dánh 1975; Trịnh Dánh 1979, (in Dương Xuân Hào và nnk .) 1980,1985 , 1993 (Miocen muộn). Lithology and Thickness
Sandstone and claystone: (1). Yellowish to yellowish-grey fine-grained sandstone and greenish-grey medium-grained muscovite-bcaring sandstone, 130-240 m thick; (2). Rhythmic intercalation of brown-grey, dark-grey claystone, claystone and greenish-grey fine-grained sandstone containing some thin lenses of lignite, 130-260 m thick. The total thickness of the formation in this section is 260-500 m.

Lower contact
Conformable on the Van Yen Fm.
Upper contact
Unconformably under the Au Lau Fm.

Containing the Leaf impressions Ficus beauveriei, Typha ỉatìssima, Cornus buchii, Oreodaphne heeri, Dalbergia sp. -- Ficus beauveriei, Quercus neriifoiia, Qu. gỉauca, Âlnus smalhauserti, Diospyros brachysepala, Fagus antipofii, Carpinus viminea, Saỉvỉnia formosa, Magnolia janchinii, Machilus nathorsti belonging to the Na Duong Flora of Oligocene age. Cicatricosisporites dorogensis, Verrutricolporites pachydermus, Pinuspollenites sp. Molluscs Tulotoma cf. stun and Unio sp..
